The Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana

Regional Sustainability Conference

The Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana partnered with the Wesselman Nature Society to present a Regional Sustainability Conference in the fall 2009.  The conference was conducted on Wednesday, October 28 at the Centre in Downtown Evansville.  Walmart Corporation served as the presenting sponsor.

The "sustainability" movement is receiving a tremendous amount of media coverage in the United States, and throughout the world.  Without question, change is in the air.  More and more businesses and individuals are electing to be more thoughtful in their practices in order to reduce their impact on the environment.  While this is great news, there is more at work here than simply doing the right thing.  Progressive business people understand that the sustainability movement is real, and it is here to stay.  It is being driven by public policy and changing consumer tastes and expectations.  Furthermore, they understand that executing a business model that embraces sustainable business practices can add dollars to a company's bottom line.

The agenda for the Regional Sustainability Conference was well-rounded and informative.  It explored sustainable business practices, as well as sustainable community and economic development practices.  The conference featured a number of highly-regarded keynote speakers.  It also included an interactive panel discussion featuring representatives of regional firms engaged in sustainable business practices, breakout sessions that looked at a broad range of issues including waste stream reduction, energy conservation, and the economics of green design and construction, and more.  Gerry Dick, Host and Creator of inside Indiana Business with Gerry Dick, served as the conference's master of ceremonies.
